Academic detailing is established as one of the few effective educational methods known to change prescribing behaviour.  The process engages a health care professional in a one-to-one discussion about a specific therapeutic topic.  Clear educational objectives are defined before the interview, which are designed to investigate baseline knowledge and motivations for current prescribing patterns.  Concise educational materials form the basis of a discussion which highlight and repeat the essential messages.

Practice visit detail aids are provided in Microsoft Word® format to allow addition of local guidance or prescribing data. If these documents are altered in anyway please make this clear whilst acknowledging the information has been adapted from the RDTC publication.

This information is produced for use by NHS healthcare professionals. See site disclaimer.
